The 2 day Bidwill Cup started with Red Star playing Lansdowne, with day 1 being on the 31st January and day 2 the following Saturday on the 7th Feb. It was great to see the number of Rathkeale and Wairarapa College boys playing for the clubs in this competition.
Red Star won the toss and put Lansdowne into bat. The third ball of the second over saw Herbie dismissed, caught by Chris Wenden and bowled by Sean Jarvis. The 2 cousins, Brock Price and Dylan Price, steadied the ship and put on a 36 run partnership before Brock was given LBW off the bowling of Xavier McCluskey. Dylan showed a lot of maturity, batting for 143 minutes. Brad Griffith joined Dylan at the crease and these young guys batted very well to take the team to 71 before Dylan was given out lbw off the bowling of Pete Sigvertson. Captain, Jamie Holmes and the experienced Alex Treseder put on a valuable 66 run partnership before Jamie was caught and bowled by Sean making 35 runs. Alex was bowled by George Deans and made 32 runs. Lansdowne made 180 all out in 69.3 overs, with Sean and George taking 3 wickets each and Pete Sigvertson and Xavier McCluskey taking 2 each.
Disappointingly for Red Star, Dion Knight and Nathan Elliott were dismissed early and Red Star were 2 for 2 after 1.2 overs. However, Sean Jarvis and George Deans batted very well and put a 69 run partnership on the board, with George making 35 having being caught by Alex Treseder off the bowling of Dane Buchanon. Sean Jarvis looked very comfortable, reaching his 50 just before the end of day 1 and the game was very evenly poised with Red Star at 102 for 3 off 24 overs.
Day 2, the 7th Feb saw a very different game for Red Star. Stefan clean bowled Sean with his 5th ball of his first over and the next ball Troy Burling was caught by Alex off Stefan’s bowling. Brock Price was on fire and dismissed 4 of the Red Star batsmen for 13 runs in 6 balls. Red Star were all out for 119 runs giving Lansdowne a lead of 61 runs.
Lansdowne then batted and the middle order batsmen, Brad Griffith, Jamie Holmes and Alex Treseder batted very well with Jamie top scoring on 44. At 183 for 8 and a lead of 244, Lansdowne declared. There were 58 overs left in the day and Red Star need 245 runs to win.
This time it was Stefan who did the early damage dismissing Nathan and Sean early. Chris Wenden and Dion Knight showed some resistance but at 34 for 4 Red Star looked to be in trouble. Troy Burling attacked the bowling of Jamie Holmes and got to 55 very quickly off only 22 balls.
With a depleted Red Star side they were all out for 105 runs, falling short by 139 runs. Stefan Hook-Sporry was the pick of the bowlers in this innings taking 5 wickets for only 15 runs off 10.1 overs.
The win meansthat Lansdowne retain the Challenge Cup which will be up for grabs in the next game when Greytown host Lansdowne.
