Wairarapa’s Melissa Hansen (Wairarapa College 1st XI, CD Hinds) has been part of the history making New Zealand U/20 women’s Indoor Cricket side over the last two weeks. The team were the first ever U/20 side to have a victory over Australia U/20s, in fact doing it twice. Making it even more impressive, NZ U/20s were the only team across all grades to beat an Australian line-up. Unfortunately for the women, the Australians managed two wins of their own, including the final.
The World Cup was run on a round-robin basis, with Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand being the four competing teams. Each team played each other three times before the final. In these round-robin stages the New Zealanders had three comfortable wins against both South Africa and England respectively as well as two of three matches versus Australia. Hansen was an integral member of the side, including completing the best figures against Australia (combined batting and bowling) in one of their close losses.
