Turkey Red Greytown have pulled off a sensational victory to win the Central Districts Club Champs elimination series at Manawaroa Park in Palmerston North over Manawatu champions Freyberg by 4 wickets.

Once again the Greytown side won the toss and elected to bowl first which paid dividends as Freyberg stuttered through to 42-4. Some middle order resistance from Cleaver 22 and Pricemore 64 not out saw Freyberg through to a total of 194.

The Greytown reply started in a similar fashion to the Freyberg innings and at 95-6 the southerners looked to be in serious trouble.

But this was all to change as captain Gordon Reisima joined the cool head of Steve Coleman at the crease. The pair milked the Freyberg bowlers all over the park with a mixture of patience and aggression and eased past the total in just 39.5 overs. Coleman the star of the show finishing on 75 not out off 95 balls including 7 fours and one 6. Reisima playing the more aggressive role bringing up his half century off the final ball of the match, 51 not out, off just 49 balls.

Coleman had earlier been the chief destroyer for the Greytown side as he took 3-34 off his 10 overs to complete a fine all round performance.

Vice captain Seth Rance was miserly in takng 2-17 off his 10 overs.

Rance who has played first class level for the Central Stags was ecstatic with the win and said “It’s one of the most satisfying moments in my cricketing career, first class included.”

The Greytown side now await details of the National Club Championship which is held at the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland at the conclusion of the local club cricket season.

Wairarapa Cricket and the community congratulates the Greytown Cricket Club for the fantastic achievement and we wish them all the best for the National tournament
