The Wairarapa Hardball Invitational XI played the Johnsonville Hardball XI in blustery conditions in Greytown Cricket Club on Sunday, 7th December in a 30 over game.
This was the first encounter of what is hoping to be a regular fixture. The game was played in good positive spirits, with all the kids having a great day.
Wairarapa scored 132 for the loss of 6 wickets with highlights from N. Shepherd (30), G. Parke (17*) retired and S. Loader (12*). Bowling for Johnsonville, Aryton got 1 wicket for 19 rusn, Cameron 1 wicket for 9 runs and Ollie 1 wicket for 11 runs.
In reply Johnsonville struggled to 70 for 5 after their 30 overs with top scorer being Daniel (17) retired, Jackson (11) and Cameron (4) retired. Best bowlers for Wairarapa were A Taylor 2 wickets for only 2 runs, J Robinson 1 wicket for 10 runs and H Wiramamaden 1 wicket for 11 runs.
Andrew Taylor was awarded the trophy for “Wicket of the Day”
The other game was between the Wairarapa Incrediball Invitational XI versus the Johnsonville Incrediball 1st XI in a 25 over match. This was the first time for many from the Wairarapa teams plying so many overs and playing the Wellington rules which included “when you are out your are out!”
The Wairarapa played very well. They won the toss and elected to bowl first. They restricted Johnsonville to 46 runs, making great use of the minus 5 runs for a run out. Wairarapa ran out Johnsonville 7 times with some great fielding by all.
The Wairarapa team then went into bat and had several batters retiring before reaching their target. It was a good all round performance from a group who had never played together before.
The JCB hope to keep this connection with Johnsonville and make it an annual event.
Thanks to the match of the day sponsor Eye Spy Security of Wellington for supplying the trophies.
