Sunday saw a very competitive Wairarapa U/13 Girls side play an annual tie of two matches versus Wellington U/13s at the Hutt Rec in Lower Hutt.
The first match was a modified game, allowing all 12 girls from each side a bat and a bowl. Pairs batted for between 3 and 4 overs each with loss of runs rather than dismissals being implemented. A slow start from Wairarapa, batting first, saw the team struggle to remain in positive numbers up until the 12th over. However a very good partnership between Kayarna Jones-Dennes (11*) and Olivia Clark, combined with some late hitting from Jessica Roseingrave (two boundaries) saw Wairarapa through to 56 from their 20 overs (after loss of runs was taken into account). In reply Wairarapa pegged back wickets at regular intervals, through Ella Southey (two), Macy Lyford and Eva Wootton only to see Wellington finish on 62 from their 20, a 6 run loss.
The afternoon game saw the real stuff, with a T20 fixture between the teams. Again Wairarapa batted first and had a slow start, losing 3 early wickets and then on to 38/5. However, Olivia Clark (21*) and Olivia Horsbrugh (6*) turned things around with a fantastic 40 run partnership to see the team through to 78/5 off it’s 20 overs. Wellington’s reply was very similar to the first match, with regular wickets whilst runs were also being scored. With 7 required from 3 overs it looked a forlorn hope for Wairarapa, but a wicket maiden bowled by Elizabeth Cohr back up by two tidy final overs, left Wellington one to win off one ball. The resulting run out to tie the scores was a fantastic way to finish and a fair reflection of the day.
